I’ve been to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights several times since it opened. The first time through, I was mostly awed by the building. On the second time, the content of the displays seemed to sink into my consciousness a bit more deeply. And what kept jumping to my awareness was how often the concept that “everything is related” occurred. Every time I go, this becomes stronger; truly no person is an island.
Everything is related to everything else. I tell my nursing students that this is the meaning of our “relational” approach to nursing and health. It’s all related – health, culture, economics, beliefs & values, politics, personal experience, history, ethics….pull on any of these threads and the whole fabric is affected to some degree. So we cannot view any person as separate from their context and experience.
